The Reconstruction: January 2007

It's been a long time....

...and a lot has happened. Where was I? Alternately moping around and trying to get myself out of a funk. I'm still working on it. But here's what you've missed...
  1. I spackled and sanded, and sanded and spackled, and sanded and....well, you get the idea.
  2. The bedroom got a nice coating...or three or four of cottonseed, a loverly buttery yellow/tan. It makes me happy.
  3. Baseboard in the bedroom....I did plenty of sawing...with appropriate eye protection. I was told by some passing folks that it was "man's work." I declined their offer of assistance. Several days later, I operated a nail gun. Just call me Rosie the Riveter.
  4. I caulked my baseboard...and did a pretty damn good job, if I do say so myself.
  5. I am now thoroughly convinced that I can do a better job that 95% of the contractor's out there....because I actually care what it looks like when it's finished....and because I can do geometry....with a little help from Steve-o.
  6. The green hornet went to the big donation parking lot in the sky....or rather, to some car auction, auctioned off for parts. Don't even ask me how little they got for it. I don't like to think about it. One too many repair bills meant the poor Hyundai was taken away on a rainy December morning, donated for a good cause.
  7. I have the storage unit almost all cleaned out. Just a few large items, some of which will be donated...including a sewing table with sewing machine in it rom the 50's - worked last time I tried it, but needed oil.
  8. At our work holiday party, I won the auction for a session of kitchen design consulting. So, I donated $, get a tax deduction, and will get help with my kitchen. I'm excited.
I've also come to a conclusion that many of you probably reached months ago - that if I don't do the damn house repairs pronto, I won't even get to enjoy them. If I end up leaving town in 6-8 months (compeletely up in the air), I may barely be done with the repairs, but does that mean I shouldn't do them? What's left, you ask? Well, some things have to be done...at least according to me - a new entry door, the hole that still exists in the kitchen wall, the holes in the ceiling that the electrician made. And then there's the other stuff - not repairs so much as improvements. A pocket door for the bathroom, built-in shelves for the bathroom, built-in shelves for the hallway, tiling the area under the washer/dryer, re-doing the bathroom tub wall area - more tiling, new interior doors, another recessed light in the kitchen. I could go on. No, really...I could. So...when do I stop, and call it done...or done enough?
Why does it feel like everything is swirling very fast right by me....kinda like poor Smidgen here?
When all you really want to do is take a nap.
